Welcome to 4th Grade Math and RELA
Our 4th grade math students are exploring place value and how it effects a number. We have played many games
and activities to discover how the value of a number changes when its place is changed. Students will receive math homework each night. Please help your child review their homework.
All students should be practicing their basic math facts each night for 20 minutes. The goal is for all students to leave 4th grade mastering their basic facts. For example, 60 basic addition and subtraction problems in 2 minutes. Multiplication and division problems should be mastered at the rate of 50 problems in 2:30 minutes.
In RELA, we are investigating the different genres and types of stories. We have discussed types of books the students like to read and ones that will open our reading horizon. The goal is for students to read books from different genres this year. The teachers will be helping students choose various genres and topics. The hope is that students will find books and interests that are new.
All students will be assessed through the BAS system in the first few weeks of school. This will allow the teachers to teach at your student at their current reading level. When a student reads at their current reading level, they
are able to learn more and progress at a great rate. Our students will not be receiving spelling words as they have in the past. This year we are using a new program titled Words Their Way. Students will complete activities around a certain skill or sound. The goal is for the student to learn the skill or sound and be able to use it in other words; not just memorization of words.
