5th Grade Math and RELA
5th grade math has started Unit 1. We are exploring order of operations solving equations. The students will have homework for about 20-30 minutes per night. All students need to review all basic facts. The 5th grade team excepts all students to complete basic drill sheets each Monday. If the students do not meet the required number correct, then they will be assigned a drill packet that is due that Friday. The 5th grade team hopes that all students leave Barnwell mastering their basic facts.
In RELA, we are investigating the different genres and types of stories. We have discussed types of books the students like to read and ones that will open our reading horizon. The goal is for students to read books from different genres this year. The teachers will be helping students choose various genres and topics. The hope is that students will find books and interests that are new.
All students will be assessed through the BAS system in the first few weeks of school. This will allow the teachers to teach at your student at their current reading level. When a student reads at their current reading level, they are able to learn more and progress at a great rate.
Our students will not be receiving spelling words as they have in the past. This year we are using a new program titled Words Their Way. Students will complete activities around a certain skill or sound. The goal is for the student to learn the skill or sound and be able to use it in other words; not just memorization of words.
